American toys were originally made in the home, but by 1750, artisans who specialized in making toys were established in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Charleston, and other cities. From the 1830s onward, commercial mass production of toys was a flourishing industry in the United States. The National Gallery of Art is running an online exhibition: Toys From The Index of American Design... The Index of American Design consists of approximately 18,000 watercolor renderings of American decorative arts objects from the colonial period through the nineteenth century. Produced between 1935 and 1942, this visual archive reflects the expanding interest in American material culture that began to emerge at that time.
